Novlene Williams-Mills “Comes From Behind” Again

Shanghai, China – Novlene Williams-Mills JAM may have given herself a huge psychological boost going into her next race, by handing a “come from behind” defeat to 2011 Daegu 400m World Champion Amantle Montsho of Botswana in the 2nd, IAAF Diamond League Meeting in Shanghai, China, just hours ago.

Reports are that, Montsho took an early lead by going out faster than usual. However, when the athletes came off the final curve into the straight of the last 100m, Montsho did not have enough “left in the tank” to ward off an impressive serge from Jamaican Novlene Williams-Mills. Williams-Mills went pass the reigning World Champion in what some have termed “effortless grace”.

Williams-Mills time of 50.00 seconds, just .01 seconds off her time at the Jamaica International Invitational Meet earlier this month, when she handed a similar defeat to 2009 Berlin 400m World Champion Sanya Richards-Ross, is the second fastest in the world so far. Montsho who was able to secure the second place spot, was timed at 50.83 seconds. Third place went to Jamaican Keliese Spencer with a season best time of 51.81 seconds.

Including the Jamaica Invitational, Williams-Mills is 3 for 3 so far this year. And, she has gone up against serious contenders for the 400m title at the London Olympics. Williams-Mills will not only have to sharpen her impressive early season form, but will no doubt also be required to prove that she is capable of handling the rounds in London.

Another Jamaica Invitational Champion, Carmelita Jeter did not contest the 100m at this meet. Instead, the 32 year old US sprinter, went up against Jamaican “Sprint Queen” Veronica Campbell-Brown in the 200m and faltered in the last couple of meters of the race to finish 2nd, just .12 seconds slower that Campbell-Brown, who won in 22.50 seconds.

Jamaica Invitational will try to continue to follow it’s champions who have winning streaks, and report said information to our subscribers.
